A BURY school has unveiled its new outdoor facilities after it was awarded £10,000 from a Tesco grant.

St Peter's C of E Primary School in Whitefield Road was awarded the money as part of the supermarket's Bags of Help funding scheme, with Groundwork, which supports local community projects with funds raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores.

The funding was used to develop the school’s outdoor facilities including improving the existing sensory gardens, creating new bedding areas for the children to plant and grow flowers and herbs in, and brand new artworks on the playground floor for children to play with and learn from.

Steve Wedgeworth, Head Teacher at St Peter’s, said: "We’re grateful for all of the support that we’ve received from Tesco, and are thrilled that we’ve been able to improve the outdoor spaces for our children.

"It’s so important for us that our kids get to enjoy valuable time outdoors, and are able to not only play but learn and develop at the same time."

Staff and pupils from the school were joined by Tesco Bury F & F Manager Cheryl Brennan and Community Champion Wendy Howarth for a presentation unveiling a specially designed commemorative plaque donated by Tesco to mark their grant.

The Bags of Help scheme has awarded more than £33 million across more than 6,400 local projects in 600 communities, voted for by local Tesco shoppers every month, since launching in 2015.

Community groups and charities can apply for funding, and Tesco customers and colleagues can nominate projects that they’d like to see receive some cash.

Mark Thomas, Corporate Affairs Manager for the North for Tesco, said: "It’s fantastic that we’re able to give back and support local groups and communities through our Bags of Help Scheme, and we’re thrilled to see the money going to great use and benefitting future generations."
