FIREFIGHTERS were verbally abused and threatened as they tackled a fire in Openshaw Park.
Last night, around 9:30pm five firemen from Bury station were called to the playground of the park and on arrival were met by a large group of around 15-20 youths.
The yobs started threatening and abusive behaviour towards the crews. As they withdrew themselves around five of the gang charged towards them.
Police were called to the scene but when they arrived the youths had fled the scene.
No-one was hurt.
Watch manager, Rick Taylor of Bury Fire Station said: "We're just trying to do our job and this kind of behaviour is a waste of our resources and ties us up considerably.
"On the scene we had to wait for police to arrive and this is time delayed on what could be a major fire in Bury.
"We should not be subjected to abuse while trying to keep people safe."
The fire was set to rubbish and the playground furniture in the park and is thought to have been started deliberately.
