A BURY mum and son will embark on the challenge of a lifetime this summer when they take on the Camino Santiago de Compostela trek.
Judith Kelly, who is a councillor for Redvales ward, will be joined by her son Harrison, on the 120-kilometre walk.
Harrison, aged 15, is currently sitting his GCSEs at Tottington High School, but while his schoolfriends will enjoy a well-deserved rest this summer, he will jet out to Portugal on July 1 ahead of the walk.
They hope to reach the Santiago de Compostela by July 8.
The pair, who live in Rhine Close, will take on the walk in aid of the MS Society, a charity close to Cllr Kelly’s heart as brother has secondary progressive MS. She has previously taken part in the Great Manchester Run and Great Manchester Swim, but said: “I have never done anything quite as big as this before.
"We decided that as well as Harrison and I spending some quality time together on the walk, we’d also use it was part of this year’s fundraising. He likes walking so he was completely up for it.
“I’ll be so far out of my comfort zone. I always have my full 20kg luggage allowance and have never backpacked before. Harrison goes to Explorer Scouts so thinks he’ll be fine!”
Tottington High School have supported the pair by raising more than £200 from a tuck shop, as well as a raffle.
Cllr Kelly is also organising a wine event at the end of June to help reach their £2,000 target.
