AS the England team inspired the nation, Kieran Trippier inspired a Ramsbottom poet.

Paul Jenkins, who is known for his entertaining school-age poetry, put pen to paper after fellow Ramsbottom-lad Kieran Trippier’s stunning penalty on Tuesday night.

Mr Jenkins, aged 40, had watched the match with Ramsbottom Running Club in Irwell Works Brewery after an early run. He wrote the ditty and put it on Facebook as soon as he got home.

He said: “I wrote it as I came in the door last night and my phone hasn’t stopped buzzing ever since.

“Hopefully it’s putting a bit of joy out there.”

The Trippier poem, titled Local Boy, has been shared on Facebook almost 200 times so far and received more than 200 reactions.

27-year-old Trippier stepped up to the mark after extra time had been played scoring a sublime penalty past Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina.

After the match Trippier, who is from Summerseat and attended Holcombe Brook Primary School and Woodhey High School, Tweeted "What a special night! Love this team! Roll on Saturday".

Mr Jenkins, who is a governor at Holcombe Brook Primary, has been writing a poem a day through the World Cup for the children to look at and take inspiration for as starter activities.

He said: "The school is really proud of Kieran and Sky came down recently to interview the kids. Everyone is 100 per cent behind him."

Mr Jenkins added: "I've been following the whole tournament and it's the most unpredictable tournament we've ever seen. It's been a pleasure, a lot of fun."

It is not clear whether Trippier knows about his poem but Mr Jenkins believes a family member has been tagged in the post on Facebook.

Mr Jenkins said: "I would be exceptionally happy to get a comment from Kieran Trippier."

LOCAL BOY

He started out at Holcombe Brook,

Then moved on to Woodhey,

But oh my word,

Can you believe,

Just what he did today!

Our finest local legend,

With pressure bearing down,

He kept his head,

Put it to bed,

And now he wears the crown,

Of Rammy’s football hero,

(Though he’s from Summerseat)

But we don’t care as he sent home

Those rotten awful cheats!!
