FIRE crews were called after the electric wiring behind an oven burst into flames.
The incident happened at around 8.30pm yesterday at a house in Tottington Road, Bury.
Smoke and fire damage was sustained to the property's kitchen and an adjoining conservatory.
However residents had closed the doors to the room preventing the fire and smoke from spreading.
The fire is thought to be accidental, caused by a fault to the oven's wiring. Firefighters spent around 90 minutes bringing the fire under control and ensuring that it did not spread through the electric and gas mains.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to an accidental fire involving the electrics behind the back of a cooker at a residential property in Tottington Road at around 8.30 last night.
"The fire was caused accidentally by the electrics at the back, and just involved the wiring and the wood behind the cooker.
"There was quite a bit of damage to the kitchen and the room next door, but the occupiers had shut the doors so this was limited.
"They had done the right thing to stop the smoke travelling.
"We had to dig the fire out to make sure it had not spread to the electrics and gas."
