The carriageway has reopened

A LORRY fire has shut the M61 near Bolton .

Emergency services are at the scene as police have shut off the northbound carriageway, between junction  2 Bolton and junction 4 Atherton Police and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance.

National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene providing assistance with traffic management.

Passers-by reported hearing two big noises as the fire broke out.

Diversions are in place and traffic within the closure is being turned back, starting at the rear of the queue to travel back upn the carriageway. Motorists are being told to await instructions from  officers.

The closure is likely to remain in place through the night, with the contents of the lorry having to be unloaded to ensure there is no risk of fire re-igniting.

Highways officers have thanked drivers for their patience.

Motorists are advised to follow the solid square diversion symbol on road signs.
