Work to build new skate park in Bury has grinded to a halt as the council make efforts with the contractor to get the project back on track.

Plans for the facility in Clarence Park were put forward in September last year and designs were submitted in February this year before work began.

The new proposals were unveiled last year after a previous skate park at the beauty spot shut two years ago due to vandalism.

But residents who live near the park and regular visitors have pointed out that installation of the skate park stopped at the end of June and has not continued since.

At the moment, the area is empty as the old ramps were removed ready for the new materials to be brought in for construction.

Cllr Kevin Peel, deputy cabinet member for environment, climate change and operations at the council, said in the Friends of Clarence Park Facebook group: “Park users will have noticed no progress on the building of the new skate park over the last couple of months.

“I’m limited in what I can say but keep getting questions so I wanted to let people know what I can.

“The company who won the contract to build the winning design have been unresponsive for some time and the matter is now with the council’s legal department.

“The new skate park will be built, but there is going to be a delay while the current situation is resolved.

“Please bear with us and when we can share more information we will.”

The contractor tasked with building the skate park, The Freestyle Collective, work with communities across the country to build sports leisure facilities.

In response to the delay in the site being built, council spokesman said: “For several months, the council has been working alongside the Friends of Clarence Park, local residents and community interest company Proffitts – Investing in Communities to improve Clarence Park.

“A major part of this project is to redevelop the wheeled sports area.

“However, although work has been done to clear the site of the old equipment, the installation of the new equipment has not yet started.

“The main contractor on the project, The Freestyle Collective Limited, haven’t been seen at the park for several weeks.

“We are urgently seeking clarification from them on why they are not on site, but so far, they have not responded.

“Despite the delay, we can reassure people that the redevelopment of the wheeled sports area and the whole of Clarence Park will continue to move forward.

“This park has always been important to the people of Bury, and we look forward to making it an even better place for residents and visitors to enjoy.”

Efforts have been made to contact The Freestyle Collective about the situation.
