Young musicians could see free music lessons in Bury as a devoted grandad and charity push for support.

Steven Goodman, a founder of Liv’s Trust, and grandad of Olivia Campbell-Hardy, 15, who died in the Manchester Arena attack in May 2017, is hoping for more young adults to benefit from free music sessions in Bury.

Liv’s Trust, set up in Olivia’s memory, aims to provide support for those under 25 in Greater Manchester who want to pursue music and dance.

Over the past few weeks, youngsters have been able to enjoy free weekly music and dance classes, something Steve wants to continue proving.

He said: “We did a dance taster for anybody who wants to try out dance with two teachers at St Mary's RC Primary School in Radcliffe, the ones that turned up did very well and we offered them a chance to go to Lark Dance Drama and Gymnastics and have a month’s free dance lessons.

“Then on August 24, we had a keyboard and guitar session at the boy’s club in conjunction with the Mad Theatre (based in Manchester).

"They really enjoyed this so wanted a repeat, which we did on Wednesday, August 31.

“Unfortunately, we're going to have to bring that to an end as the Mad Theatre is in rehearsal for angels with mucky faces.”

Despite having to halt the free lessons, Steve is hoping it won’t be long before they are back up and running again.

With the current cost of living crisis, he feels it is important for young adults to have access to these free lessons.

He said: “In October, we’re hoping to launch free ‘Hear Me Roar’ sessions for anyone interested in music, songwriting or even spoken word.

“These will hopefully be on Fridays between 7pm and 9pm for young adults around 14 to 25 years old, it also gives young adults something to do on a Friday evening for free.

“Since Covid, we've not had much of an attendance, so we really want to get things moving in Radcliffe and put it towards the local community.”

The lessons are targeted to begin around October 7, at the Girls and Boys Club, Radcliffe.

Steve said: “It is Olivia's 21st this year and we're looking for businesses to support us as much as they can.

“This would be to help sponsor and support these children's music sessions as we still need things like drum kits we need help funding instruments.

“We also have two church groups that are looking to work with us as well.”

Alongside the free lessons, Steve also helps fund and sponsor Bury Youth Fire Choir.

Speaking about the work Liv’s Trust do to help young adults get into music, Steve said: “It's really nice to work within a group and in the community…it really is marvellous.”
