An Elton High School pupil has been announced as a runner-up for the Young Citizen of the Year award after her outstanding dedication to helping those with special educational needs (SEN).

Lexie Clark, 14, works as a junior instructor at Novas Freestyle Martial Arts Academy in Bury and has been recognised for her work helping young children and those with SEN to feel comfortable through sport.

Currently awaiting a diagnosis herself, Lexie says she is aware of the hurdles in place for those with SEN, autism and ADHD and the knockbacks of trying to be diagnosed.

Dad to Lexie, Lewis Clark, said that despite her own struggles, she has continued to go above and beyond.

He said: “On top of school, preparing for her GCSEs, teaching at the academy and caring for her students, she has just qualified to represent the England kickboxing team in Florida.

“She does so much and to be recognised for the Young Citizen of the Year award is incredible and very well deserved, we are more than proud of her.”

Lexie, who lives in Bolton, is also preparing to start a fundraiser to help more teachers and adults receive SEN training

Lewis said: “Within the system, it can be very hard to get a diagnosis of autism or ADHD, especially with girls.

“For Lexie at the moment, she is constantly jumping hurdles so that she can get a diagnosis as a result, her own struggles have really spurred her to help others and raise awareness.”

When Lewis, who is the head coach at the Peter Street Academy, suffered with his health last year, Lexie stepped up and not only helped with the club but also made a huge difference to youngsters who attended.
