A nine-time World Record Holder dubbed the “fastest blind man on the planet" will be coming to Bury next month to talk about his achievements and how he completed his life’s ambitions.

Mike Newman, from Bolton, became the first blind man on earth to drive a car at 200 mph and has been called the fastest blind man on land and water.

Despite being born blind, Mike always had a passion for cars and it was his life’s ambition to become a racing driver.

Mike worked tirelessly to live his dream, and through grit and determination to succeed, he worked alongside a Jaguar dealership, to acquire a racing car that would enable him to do it.

Bury Times:

The “Super Human, Mike Newman”, will be speaking about this ambition and his achievements on June 6, at the Bury Masonic Hall at an event hosted by the Bury Blind and Partially Sighted Society.

Jill Logan, CEO of the society, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming super human, Mike Newman to speak at our supper in June, an evening not to be missed. 

“The amazing story of his achievements with cars, bikes, speedboats and even in the skies is inspirational. 

“He also is the co-founder of The Speed of Sight charity that provides blind and disabled people with the opportunity to take part in a unique driving experience.”

In 2001 he achieve the motorbike speed record doing 89mph on an Aprilia bike, in 2003 he took the car land speed record of 144mph in a Jaguar XJR and broke this in 2005 by doing  176mph in a BMW M5.

His other world records include:

2011 – Aerial record flying the most loop-de-loops

2013 – Car land speed record: 186mph in a Porsche GT2

2013 – Water speed record: 93mph in a Silverline Racing Boat

2014 – Car land speed record: 200mph in a Nissan GTR

2015 – Truck land speed record: 120mph in a Man Racing Truck

2017 - Water speed record: 102mph in a Silverline Racing Boat.
