Here’s a charming photo showing the old Twist Bridge at Summerseat in 1970.

Bury Times: Twist Bridge, Summerseat, 1970

The bridge, one of two crossing points over the Irwell, still stands today.

In this photo it appears as though the man on the bridge has dropped a line into the water; possibly he has a bucket at the end of the line to measure the water quality. Either that or he’s an optimistic angler. It’s clearly fascinating the young boy.

In the background you can see an unusual hut on wheels near to where work is going on to rebuild the stone wall at the roadside.
