TACKLING violence against women has been taken up by the BurySafe partnership again.

A number of local events are planned to coincide with this year’s White Ribbon campaign which began on Tuesday to mark the UN’s International Day to eliminate violence against women. White Ribbon will climax on December 10 which is Human Rights Day.

Tomorrow there will be a stall in the Mill Gate shopping centre with representatives from BurySafe, Greater Manchester Police and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service attending to promote the campaign.

Tomorrow evening, a football tournament with teams from Bury College, Bury Council, Six Town Housing, the Youth Offending Team and voluntary sector organisations such as the Asian Development Association of Bury will take place at Bury College’s Millennium Centre between 5pm and 8.30pm. Councillor Yvonne Creswell will present the winning team with a trophy.

Councillor Creswell said: “This is the third year Bury has been involved in the campaign and I would urge men and women to wear the ribbons during the campaign period and show their support for a worthy cause.”

The final step of the campaign will see men of all ages and backgrounds gather in Whitehead Gardens at noon on December 4.

They will walk a mile in ladies shoes to raise awareness of the campaign.
