A woman was thrown from a car following a collision in Whitefield.
The 30-year-old is in a life-threatening condition after the collision which took place shortly after 10.15am yesterday.
Officers were called to Bury New Road and found a Fiat Punto had been in collision with a road sign.
The woman, believed to be the passenger, had been thrown from the car by the force of the collision and was found lying on the road unconscious.
She was taken to North Manchester General Hospital for treatment to serious head injuries, which are described as life threatening.
A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and remains in police custody.
Any witnesses to the collision are asked to call traffic police on 0161 856 3573.
