A BURY man broke his jaw in two places after being attacked by a gang of thugs as he made his way home from a night out with his wife.

The 54-year-old and his wife were at Victoria Station, waiting at the Metrolink platform, when they were approached by the group of five or six yobs.

Despite the conversation being initially good natured, it erupted into violence and the man was pushed to the floor before being knocked unconscious with a single punch.

Det Cons Dave Cowan, investigating for British Transport Police, said: “Although not sustained, the attack was violent in the extreme and resulted in serious injuries. which required extensive surgery to correct.”

Police are urging anyone who has information about the attack to come forward.

Det Con Cowan said: ““At the time of the assault there were several people on the platform and a busy tram had just pulled into the station.

“I have no doubt that many people witnessed the incident and I am appealing to them or anyone who knows the offenders to come forward.

“Violence of this nature is extremely rare on the railway which, when it does happen, makes it all the more shocking.

“We are doing everything in our power to trace those responsible, but need help from the public to bring them to justice.”

The incident happened at around 12.10am on January 30.
