CHEERLEADERS from Woodhey High School have been jumping for joy ever since they won a national competition.

But the spring in their step could soon be deflated as they finish school and leave behind their training base this summer.

Along with their teacher and dance trainer, Lisa Simpson, the girls are appealing for the public’s help to find a new place to practice so they can stay together as a community group.

They are also looking for a local business or individual to sponsor them so they can enter more high-profile competitions.

The group of 10, called W-Force, differs from traditional cheerleading as it combines elements of street-style dance with aspects of cheerleading.

The squad has been together for two years and in that time has been extremely successful, winning the Bury School’s Dance Championships and winning first place in the National School’s Street Cheer Championships last June at the first attempt.

Miss Simpson said: “As far as I know, we are the only school team in this region that compete at this new form of cheerleading. As the current squad are in Year 11, they will be leaving school soon and will no longer be supported by the school.

“We have decided to stay together to compete and perform locally and nationally as a community team — however, this requires sponsorship.

“When the girls leave school, we will be entering national competitions and competing against dance schools that have the fancy studios and mirrors. We currently raise all our own money through school events like cake bakes but when they leave we will struggle because it costs a lot to enter the higher level competitions.”
