RYAN Lowe’s late leveller helped newly-promoted Bury to an impressive opening-day point at League One title favourites Huddersfield.

The Terriers, who gave a full debut to former Wanderers striker Danny Ward, were pushed all the way by Richie Barker’s men, who were aggrieved not to come away from the Galpharm Stadium with a win.

The Shakers saw a clear-cut penalty claim turned down after just 10 minutes while, in the second half, David Worrall had a shot cleared off the line.

It was an impressive performance from the Shakers, and one which last season’s leading goalscorer Lowe is keen to see more of.

“We said before the game that we were going to come to places like Huddersfield and enjoy it, and I think we did that,” he said.

“We got the ball down, played well and got in their faces a little bit. If anything, we might have deserved to win the game.

“If we put in performances like that we will soon be moving up this league.”

Bury should have been in front on 10 minutes when on-loan striker Mark Cullen outstripped Peter Clarke and was brought down in the area. Referee Graham Scott, however, waved play on but Bury continued to press in the first half with Andy Bishop and Lowe having shots on goal.

Town showed their promotion pedigree after 65 minutes when substitute Lee Novak crossed from the right and Gary Roberts ran in at the far post to smash the ball home.

But Bury were not to be denied and they were level nine minutes later when Lowe latched on to a long throw inside the penalty area and neatly swivelled around his marker before firing past Ian Bennett.

The hosts almost snatched an unlikely win late on but Cameron Belford made a fantastic save after his own defender, Mark Hughes, had sliced a clearance towards the top corner.

“We will relish this opportunity this season,” Lowe added. “It is always nice to get on the scoresheet and I am more than happy that it helped us to a point. We have to carry this type of form on now because we don’t want to be pushovers this season.”
