TOTTINGTON traders are still suffering the effects of new pay and display charges in the village's main car park, according to Save Our Village campaigners.

Visitors have been forced to pay to use the Robin Hood car park in Market Street for more than two months, causing a loss of business. Traders describe the village as a "ghost town".

Tottington councillor Yvonne Wright, who has led the campaign, said: "Although the reduction in charges on the Robin Hood car park have been implemented, it has made no difference as it appears that it is definitely the principle of paying that everyone is against. The amount is immaterial."

Customers can still park for free off Harwood Road. Plans are also going ahead for a free short-stay car park after residents of nearby Sherwood Close agreed for a plot of land they collectively own for garage space to be cleared and used.

Coun Wright added: "I am now appealing to those who shopped in Tottington to make the effort again. Please use the shops again now before we lose any of these businesses who are the heart of Tottington."
