A DEDICATED team of police officers is to continue patrolling Metrolink trams and stations.

The news comes after an earlier announcement that a contract between Serco Metrolink and Greater Manchester Police (GMP) was coming to an end.

However, a new package of services has been agreed which will maintain a police presence along the tram network.

Under the new agreement, a communication officer will continue to be based in the control room at Metrolink's headquarters. The officer will oversee communications with the mobile team operating across the system.

They will co-ordinate closely with Serco Metrolink's control staff and liaise with the police officers on the ground to ensure reduced response times to incidents. The special team will also continue to support Metrolink revenue protection operations and staff major events that affect the system.

The new contract also means that regular meetings will take place between Serco Metrolink and GMP to ensure targets are achieved.
