FUNDRAISING activities ranging from sitting in a bath of custard to selling sunflowers will be held to celebrate Hospice Care Week, which starts on Monday.

Staff at Bury Hospice are asking people to “do something sunny for money” by holding yellow-themed activities.

Suggested activities include wearing yellow clothes, selling yellow food, making yellow things, holding a yellow raffle, guessing the number of yellow sweets in a jar, having a custard eating competition and putting up yellow decorations.

Among the first fundraisers will be pupils at St John with St Mark’s Primary School, in Athlone Avenue, Bury, who have given a yellow theme to their harvest festival tomorrow.

Volunteers will get into a bath filled with custard on Saturday, based in the former Phones 4 U unit at the Mill Gate shopping centre.

Loose change collections will be held at the shopping centre on Wednesday and Friday next week by Bury College students and Seddy Teddy, mascot for Seddon Group, which is building the new hospice in Rochdale Old Road, Bury.

It is Bury’s second annual Hospice Care Week and organisers hope as many people as possible will get involved.

The yellow theme has been chosen because it is the colour of the hospice movement and the sunflower is the national symbol of hospice care.

Michelle King, the hospice’s community fundraiser, said: “We are trying to encourage as many schools, churches, businesses, organisations and individuals as we can to take part in Hospice Care Week by doing something yellow as a way of spreading awareness amongst the community. We want them to do simple things, which are fun to do but don’t really require a great deal of effort.”
