A 95-YEAR-OLD World War Two veteran from Bury has died after he was hit by a van in Kent.

Edward Barlow, who was born in Bury and lived in the town for many years, was hit by a white Ford Transit van in Southborough, Kent, on December 29.

Mr Barlow, known as Ted, died at the scene. The crash happened at 10.25am on the A26, London Road, near the junction with Springfield Road.

Det Con David Holmes from Kent Police is now appealing for witnesses who saw the van or Mr Barlow just before the accident.

Mr Barlow had lived in Southborough since 1999 and was widowed in 2013.

In a statement, his family said: “Ted served in the RAF in North Africa and Italy in the Second World War after graduating from Cambridge University.

“He was a keen sportsman, particularly rugby union, skiing and, throughout his life, golf.

“Ted was widowed in 2013 and was much loved by all his friends and family, both locally and in Bury. He will be greatly missed.”

The road was closed for about five hours while police carried out enquiries. The driver of the van was present when police and ambulances attended.
