DOCTORS are urging anyone observing Ramadan to plan their fasting carefully to help keep energy levels high.

People fasting during the Muslim holy month, which runs until July 17, have been advised to eat fruit, vegetables and high fibre food, and to consult their GPs to discuss their medication.

Dr Fazel Masood Butt, NHS Bury Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) East Sector chairman, said: "Fasting can be good for the soul and the body. If planned properly, it can be the perfect time to detox and begin enjoying a healthier lifestyle. People have even used times of observance and fasting to stop smoking.

"The secret is to plan fasting properly both psychologically and physically. Make sure you stay hydrated and drink plenty of water but most of all plan your food intake properly.

"If you approach your fast with discipline, it can be an opportunity to lose weight and become healthier long beyond the period of your fasting."
