NEARLY 30 pupils from a Bury school proved themselves "streets ahead" when they took part in a community clean-up.

The youngsters from Holy Trinity Primary School in Cecil Street joined volunteers to remove an assortment of refuse from nearby East Street and Spring Street.

The clean-up also involved school staff and volunteers, family members, staff from Bury Asian Women and councillors Shaheena Haroon, Tamoor Tariq and Trevor Holt.

Mr Marcus Elder, headteacher at Holy Trinity, said: "We were contacted by the Bury Asian Women's Centre about doing this. We were keen to take part because we want to develop links with our local community and give children an understanding of the importance of looking after their local environment.

"The clean-up took place over the course of a morning, although it was wet. We filled six bin bags. The children loved it and we plan to do something again, hopefully when we get better weather."

Ayesha Arif, director of Bury Asian Women's Centre, added: "The clean-up with Holy Trinity Primary School was a success."
