A LOVED-up pair of patriots said 'I do' on St George's Day — and were perfectly dressed for the occasion.

For lovebirds Gavin and Julie Green-Morris got hitched last Saturday in red-and-white colour-coded outfits, and the well-presented groom turned out as St George himself.

The couple, of Saxon Street, Elton, tied the knot at Bury Register Office on Saturday.

Gavin, aged 45, said: "Along with Halloween, St George's Day is our favourite day in the year as we're both keen patriots and, when we saw that it fell on a Saturday this year, it was the obvious choice for our big day."

Some of the other 60 weddings guests got into the spirit of the day, donning red-and-white outfits.

Best man Stephen Scholes joined Gavin in dressing as a Templar knight.

Gavin and Julie, whose maiden name is Mills, met a decade ago through mutual friends and fell in love three-and-a-half years ago.

"I had been planning a proposal for a while and we had had a drink in the Knowsley pub in Bury town centre two years ago when I decided it was the right time and got down on one knee," said Gavin, a father of four.

Julie, who has a son and a daughter, said: "Everything we do together is about smiling and fun, and even his proposal was done in a fun way. I had no hesitation in saying 'yes' to him."

On Saturday, passing cars pipped their horns as they saw the couple in their themed outfits.

Gavin said the couple who were wed in the register office immediately before them said, after seeing Gavin and Julie, that they wished they had thought of the St George's Day theme for their own ceremony.

Julie, who works in a shop at the Mill Gate Centre in Bury, added: "It was the best day I've ever had. The ceremony was lovely and the reception, at the Two Tubs pub in Bury town centre, was wonderful too."

Bricklayer Gavin explained how their mutual friends had come from far and wide, including Germany, to be there.

There was a healthy mix of squaddies, punks and female guests sporting 1950s outfits.

The couple have this week been enjoying a honeymoon in York.

They thanked everyone for attending and the Two Tubs staff for their hospitality.
