APPRENTICES from Bury College are putting their skills to the test by helping to renovate Woodhey High School.

Building Maintenance trainees have embarked on an exciting project at the Ramsbottom high school which involves using their expertise to revitalise classrooms and other areas of the school.

As the project develops, learners will be using the skills they have developed during their apprenticeship to paint and undertake other renovations.

Among those enjoying working on the community project are 27-year-old Piotr Luczak, who currently works at Tetrosyl, 25-year-old Graeme Steele, who works in property maintenance and 20-year-old building contractor Ben Stephens.

Graeme said: “The work we are carrying out is great experience as we are further developing our team work and gaining on-site experience which is different from the college workshop and our usual places of work. Working in a different environment means we have the opportunity to develop a different skill set.”

Patricia Schofield, Bury College plastering workshop tutor and assessor, said: “Our maintenance apprentices have really embraced the work that they have carried out at the school.

“Their enthusiasm has grown as a result of completing work for the community and the sense of achievement they have taken away is very impressive.”

Kevin Graham, assistant school business manager at Woodhey, added: “We are really happy and impressed with the work that the apprentices carried out so far and look forward to continuing our ongoing partnership with Bury College.”
