THREE people escaped with no serious injuries after a two car collision in Elton.

The incident, involving a Vauxhall Astra and a Vauxhall Corsa occurred at around 3pm today, on the junction of Cottam Street and Tottington Road.

It is believed that one of the cars pulled out of the junction, colliding with the other.

Following the crash, a 19-year-old girl, who had been the passenger in the Astra, complained of chest pains and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

However, the airbags deployed in both vehicles preventing the three people in the cars, a man and two women, from suffering any serious injuries.

Both cars sustained severe damage, and the front wheel of one vehicle was so badly damaged that fire crews had to use winch to clear it from the road.

The road was closed for a few minutes before it was reduced to a single lane, and a passerby waved traffic through while emergency services operated.

Tottington road has since reopened in both directions.

Bury fire service watch manager, Steve Wilcock said: "We attended a two car road traffic collision at around 3 o'clock.

"A male and female were in the Astra and in the other car was a woman in her 40s.

"The fire service made both vehicles safe and an ambulance we requested treated a 19-year-old female, who was the passenger in the Astra, who complained of chest pains.

"The air bags deployed because they were modern cars. With air bag technology like that people can come out relatively unscathed, which was the case, and there were no serious injuries.

"We were in attendance for around 45 minutes because the damage was so severe.

"The front wheel on one of the vehicles was turned so we had to use a winch so that they could reopen the road."
