A “ROBUST” Christmas sales performance by Bury-based JD Sports Fashion Plc is likely to be reflected in the group’s forthcoming financial figures which are forecast to be in line with market expectations.

JD’s sports shops led the way in the festive sales drive, as bosses revealed like-for-like sales at its stores for the 48 weeks to January 4 were “marginally ahead” of the +5.8 per cent growth figure previously announced.

In a performance update, the leading retailer and distributor of branded sportswear, fashionwear, outdoor clothing, footwear and equipment stated: “The board believes that the group remains on course to deliver headline profit before tax and exceptional items in line with current expectations.

“The board is pleased with this year’s performance in the sports fascias and remains focused on improving the performance of other fascias within the group.”

JD Sports Fashion Plc will make its preliminary results announcement for the 52 weeks ending February 1, 2014, on April 15.

Peter Cowgill, executive chairman, said: “Christmas 2013 has seen yet another very robust performance from our core sports fascias.

"Throughout recent years of considerable change and expansion for the group, the core sports fascias’ proposition has continued to be developed and enhanced.

“I am delighted that the most recent six weeks’ trading has continued to give confidence for the future. I also expect considerable further progress elsewhere in the group in 2014.”

The business, which opened its first JD Sports store in Bury in 1981, has had its head office at Hollins Brook Way, Pilsworth, since 2002 and has more than 800 stores.

In November, Bury FC announced it had agreed a three-year sponsorship with the retailer and that the club had changed the name of its ground to the JD Stadium.
