Channel 4 has revealed its presenter line-up for its election night coverage later in the year, which has left some people confused due to the inclusion of Clare Balding.

The 53-year-old is part of a line-up that includes Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Emily Maitlis, Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart.

Whilst the date for the next general election has not yet been confirmed it is expected it will happen towards the end of 2024.

Balding is mainly known for her work in sports broadcasting, particularly for horse racing and the Olympics, as well as for covering the international dog show Crufts.

Despite her many years of experience presenting across TV and radio, some people seemed confused at her inclusion.

Channel 4 fans confused over Clare Balding election coverage inclusion

Many people seemed to be dismissive of Balding's inclusion in the election night team, with many making comments about her work covering horseracing and Crufts.

One person took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to post: "Great mega line up that to usher out 14 years of sadistic Tory rule. But what on earth will Clare Balding be doing? Coming along on a horse?"

Similar notions were expressed by another person, who said: "C4 does a lot of good news coverage, but can’t say I’ve ever thought “ok who’s analysis on politics am I desperate to hear? Oh, Clare Balding!”"

Another wrote: "It’s a great line up, but I am intrigued as to why Clare Balding is there. I thought her subjects were horses and sport?"

Meanwhile, one joked: "I'm assuming Channel 4 hired Clare Balding for their election coverage because Rory Stewart looks like a Jockey."

A similar sort of comment was made by another individual, who posted: "Clare Balding part of Channel 4's election coverage. About time #DogsAtPollingStations got the coverage it deserves."

Many people defended the choice to have Balding in the team, citing her years of experience in the media.

One person wrote: "Yes. Clare Balding. A TV Presenter, with vast experience, being given a TV presenting job. I just don’t see what’s so remarkable about that? She has skills in communicating information, often detailed. These should be welcomed."

Another was supportive of the choice, saying: "In this house... We don't talk trash about Clare Balding. She can commentate on whatever she wants."

Among certain people Balding was seen as the best presenter in the line-up with one person writing: "None of them are 'brilliant'. Alastair Campbell is a sociopathic stain on British public life. The only one of them I would allow through the front door would be Clare Balding."
