A PREGNANT woman was taken to hospital after a bus driver lost consciousness at the wheel and crashed into traffic lights in Radcliffe this morning.

The incident happened at 11.30am in Blackburn Street, opposite Radcliffe Pool and Fitness Centre, where the driver is believed to have suffered a heart attack or stroke.

The 22-year-old woman, who is 23 weeks pregnant, was a passenger on the bus and fell to the floor during the crash.

She was taken to hospital suffering from abdominal pains.

The driver regained consciousness after the crash and he was also taken to hospital, while other passengers suffered only minor injuries.

Fire and rescue officers at the scene, who were working to remove the bus and clean up oil and debris from the surrounding area, said it was lucky that more people were not seriously hurt.

They said that had the bus been travelling at a faster speed or had crashed into other vehicles or further up the pavement the incident would have been far worse.

A section of Blackburn Street was briefly closed this morning, with traffic diverted onto Spring Lane, before it was re-opened with police directing traffic around the vehicle.
