A RADCLIFFE road has been named among the worst locations in Greater Manchester for speeding offences.

In the five years from April 2009 to April 2014, a total of 3,474 drivers were caught speeding on the A665 Bolton Road, at the junction of Monton Street.

That means an average of almost two tickets a day have been issued to motorists using the road, which has a 30mph speed limit.

The figures put the A665 in the top 50 speeding ticket hotspots in the region, according to statistics released by used car dealership The Car People.

However, the data shows that the number of drivers who committed speeding offences on the road has reduced significantly year on year – a total of just 392 in 2013/14 compared to 1,517 in 2009/10.

In second place across Radcliffe and Ainsworth was the B6292 Starling Road, where 1,097 people were caught speeding, while 525 were caught on Higher Ainsworth Road.

Three speed cameras on Stand Lane caught out a total of 730 drivers over the five-year period, while 525 drivers were prosecuted for speeding offences on the A665 New Road.

The data was released after requests were sent to Greater Manchester Police through the Freedom of Information Act.

The most prolific speed camera across Greater Manchester was in Stockport, at junction 25 of the M60 clockwise, with 9,245 speeding offences being recorded in 2013/14 alone.

Jonathan Allbones, director of the Car People, said: "From our research into Greater Manchester's speeding ticket hotspots, we discovered that there have been over half a million speeding offences recorded in the region during the last five years, an average of 110,000 a year.

“Somewhat surprisingly, we actually found that there has been a decline in the number of speeding tickets issued during this period."

It was recently revealed that more than £300,000 worth of speeding fines had been handed out in just seven weeks to motorists breaking the 50mph limit on a 17-mile stretch of the M60/M62, where work to create a ‘smart motorway’ is being carried out.
