A NEW social group set up to reduce isolation among Radcliffe's elderly residents is proving a massive success.

The group, organised by mum-of-four Cherella Young, held its first event last week, with a packed-out tea party at Radcliffe Borough FC.

Since the group was first put together just a few weeks ago, it has gained a huge following online and will continue with weekly events, much to the delight of its founder.

The 32-year-old, of Red Bank Road, said: "So many people attended, literally every seat was taken. Everyone said how much of a great time they had and are all coming back with friends this week for bingo.

"All the elderly people who attended where chatting away, making new friends, laughing, smiling and really enjoying the afternoon.

"Seeing all this made me realise what a huge impact Friendly Faces will have on our community. We also had various people attend from different services offering support with either promoting the group or help with funding.

"It was a wonderful afternoon and a great time was had by all who attended. A few people have given some feedback on our Facebook page too, which has been really positive."

Ms Young, who was inspired to start up the group after encountering many lonely and isolated pensioners in her job selling mobility equipment, added that attendees came up with several ideas to expand the group's reach.

There are plans to set up activities with the 'IWill If You Will' fitn3ess campaign, while Friendly Faces has also received the backing of the ROC Centre and Radcliffe Carnival, amongst others.

Members were due to return yesterday afternoon for a bingo session, with events set to run at the football club every Wednesday from 2pm-4pm, and plans to add more times throughout the week as group becomes more established in the community.
