RADCLIFFE Hall Methodist Primary School has been shut for the rest of the week after a fire.

Firefighters were called to the school, which is in Bury Street, at 6.25am after a blaze in the electrical intake room, which is at the side of the school.

They worked to ensure the blaze did not spread, but the room is said to have been destroyed and the power supply could have been affected.

Fire officers said they would liaise with Electricity North West engineers to isolate the electricity supply and make the area safe.

Steve Wilcock, watch manager at Bury fire station, said: “A caretaker was on-site and was worried because there was quite a lot of banging and popping, and it was well lit when we arrived.

“We put it out using powder and some water to make sure it didn’t spread to the roof and other parts of the school.”

School governor Daisy Bailey said: "The school will be closed today and staff are working hard to inform parents by text of the closure.

A Bury Council spokesman added that all parts of the school be closed today and tomorrow and it could reopen on Monday.
