A YOUTH club has launched a £15,000 fundraising campaign to give their home a much-needed makeover.

Leaders at Radcliffe Boys and Girls Club are hoping to have renovations to their Withins Avenue base completed by the end of the year after launching an online donations page last weekend.

The money would be put towards creating a new football pitch, gardening area, and car park on the site.

Owen McGrattan, the club's charity coordinator and children's representative, said: "The money that we get will be used for the outside area. At the minute it's just not very safe for the kids to go out there.

"We have been quoted £13,000 by Cocklestorms to do the work, which includes getting rid of everything that's out there now, flattening the land and then building some new things on there.

"We are going to have a new football pitch, a small car park, and a gardening area that will be cared for by the children.

"On top of that we are raising another £2,000 to buy equipment that can be put out their for the children to play with and to look after the garden.

"Since the passing of Michael Earnshaw, who was one of the club's leaders, things have been let go a little and there is a real need for some serious refurbishment."

The club, which was used as a hub to organise volunteering efforts after the Boxing Day floods, sees more than 1,000 children come through its doors every month and Mr McGrattan says the refurbishments will provide a welcome boost.

He added: "The club was used as the base for the flood volunteers for a while as well, so we needed to have a big clean-up after they had left.

"Hopefully we will get most of the money in by August and then we can crack on with the work. The aim for now is to have it done by the end of this year.

"We cater for between 1,000 and 2,000 children every month so this is going to make a huge difference to them. And once the club looks a lot more appealing from the outside that will attract a lot more people to come along."
