DESIGNS for a ‘Lidl of the future’ coming to Radcliffe town centre have been revealed.

It was announced in November that the German retail giant would be moving into the former bus station site in Dale Street, creating 40 jobs at the store.

Formal plans for the new supermarket have now been lodged with Bury Council, showcasing the promised state-of-the-art facilities.

A statement submitted with the application says: “The proposed store will adopt Lidl’s flagship store design, delivering a high quality designed building that is both operationally and energy efficient.

“The store will be orientated on the site so that the main glazed shopfront faces towards Dale Street in order to provide an attractive and active frontage facing the new bus station and wider town centre beyond, but which is also has an aspect to Pilkington Way.”

The proposals include the infilling of the existing pedestrian subway underneath Pilkington Way, but developers claim this will not inhibit accessibility between the town centre and the Riverside Retail Park as the existing pedestrian crossing provides “an alternative and more popular means of crossing the highway.”

According to the plans, the supermarket will be open from 7am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sundays.

A flood risk assessment of the scheme has resulted in a number of recommendations being made to reduce danger, including setting the floor level at an appropriate height and using flood-resistant materials in the store’s construction.

The store will also be one of the first in the UK to be built according to Lidl’s new modern concept design.

Lidl UK’s Regional Head of Property, Nick Harvey, said: “The response we’ve had from the local community has been extremely encouraging and I would like to thank everyone who submitted feedback on the plans.

“Should planning permission be granted, the development will provide a modern Lidl supermarket and an improved shopping experience for shoppers in Radcliffe, creating up to 40 new full and part-time jobs for people living locally.

“We now await a decision from Bury Council and will keep everyone updated on progress in due course.”

Cllr Rishi Shori, leader of Bury Council, added: “I am delighted that Lidl’s plans to build a new store in Radcliffe are moving on apace.

“We are keen that the ongoing regeneration of the town centre will continue.”
