THE Radcliffe community has supported a family's efforts to purchase a new wheelchair for their 16-year-old son who has a terminal muscle-wasting condition.

Around 60 people turned out to Radcliffe Central Snooker Club and helped raise £923.70 to contribute to a new £10,000 wheelchair for Jason Thornton.

Visitors enjoyed a hot buffet, game of bingo, a raffle and free jukebox as well as live music on Saturday, April 21.

Radcliffe Snooker Club manager Tracey Morley said: "We had a really good event.

"Jason attended with his family. He had an absolute ball.

"It was really good fun. Everyone had a smashing time.

"The hot buffet went down very very well.

"It was fantastic to raise this amount of money — we are really made up about such a good result to help fund Jason's wheelchair."

Jason's auntie and uncle Mark and Sue Hughes, from Radcliffe, helped organise the fundraising event at the snooker club, where Mr Hughes is a member.

The event was supported by club owner David Morley and Salford City FC manager Bernard Morley.

Jason, whose family lives in Sale, was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) aged just four years old.

The condition is progressive as other muscles become affected, so Jason will need increasing help and support.

With the help of grants, a new £10,000 wheelchair has been purchased for the Ashton on Mersey School pupil, who enjoys playing wheelchair football. The fundraiser in Radcliffe will help cover the cost of the equipment.
