SADDLING up to ride a bike for the first time in his young life is Ramsbottom boy Alfie Furnival.

The six-year-old, who suffers from a rare undiagnosed genetic condition, has taken delivery of a £1,600 specially-adapted trike thanks to two fundraising events.

It's a dream come true for Alfie's parents, Natalie and Peter, who were desperate to get their son the machine because he cannot ride a normal bicycle.

Last month, the couple, of Lime Grove, organised a golf tournament at Lowes Park Golf Club, Bury, and a fundraising event at the Rose and Crown in Ramsbottom. A total of £1,700 was raised, exceeding their target.

Alfie's genetic condition means he has excessive skin lines on his hands and legs. He has learning difficulties and was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was only eight weeks old, but thankfully, he has medication which controls this.

The new trike has a number of adaptations, including special foot straps so his feet will be stuck to the pedals, a harness, and parent handles.. The trike was delivered last Friday, much to the delight of the youngster and his parents.

Mum Natalie said: "He loves the bike. It tires him out very quickly but he loves riding around on the streets and down to the park."
