MILITARY and civilian re-enactors will be out in force to join thousands of visitors in Ramsbottom next weekend.

The award-winning 1940s Weekend will steam into action over the Bank Holiday weekend as it makes a triumphant return on May 28 to 30.

The weekend, which has become an annual event for the railway for the past seventeen years, attracts more than 5,000 visitors, a figure which looks likely to increase with this year’s line-up.

Highlights include 1940s singers and entertainers, live battle scenarios, vintage and military vehicles, WW2 tank displays, military exhibitions, vintage memorabilia stalls and 1940s makeovers.

East Lancashire Railway chairman, Mike Kelly, said: “Last year’s event saw lots of new attractions and activities added to the line-up, which were really well received by those who attended, and this year will see the expansion of some of our visitor favourites, specifically the dances and battle scenarios.

“Visitors can learn how to ‘jump and jive’ on the Saturday of the event and take part in a traditional Tea Dance on the Sunday.

“The popular battle re-enactments have also been expanded upon and this year will see larger, more action packed battles with commentary throughout.

“We are really excited for this year’s event and hope that there is something for everyone to enjoy.

“There has already been a lot of interest in the event and advanced ticket sales are 45 per cent up, so fingers crossed it will be our best weekend yet.”

Guests will also be able to enjoy dance sessions, evening entertainment, craft workshops, living history displays, VE Day concert, ration card quiz, vintage cream tea services and hundreds of re-enactors.

Day tickets are available for adults at £18.00, concessions at £16.00, children at £10.00 and families (two adults and three children) at £47.00.
