TALENTED musicians from a school brass band played at a prestigious concert in Birmingham.

The youngsters, who all study at Hazlehurst Primary School in Geoffrey Street, Ramsbottom, performed at the National Festival of Music for Youth at Birmingham Symphony Hall last Thursday.

The band, which has 46 members aged between eight and 11, impressed judges at a performance at Rochdale Town Hall in the spring and were invited to perform in Birmingham.

The school’s headteacher, Mark Golding said: “It was a wonderful occasion and we are all very proud of the children.

“It is unusual for a junior brass band to have so many members, but it is all great fun.

"The children love their music and the standard of their playing is excellent for children of this young age.”

The band was formed five years ago after pupils expressed enthusiasm for learning instruments together.

Pupils rehearse for an hour a week and won the brass-band class in Rochdale Music Festival earlier this year, as well as the instrumental group class in Ramsbottom Music Festival.

It also performed recently at Bandemonium in Bury and to students of Millwood Primary Special School in Radcliffe during morning assembly.
