Ramsbottom will get another supermarket as Aldi has won its battle to open up in the town.
Shopkeepers and the Heritage Society claimed Aldi’s plans would have a detrimental impact on the independent retailers who are already struggling against competition from the existing Tesco and the Co-op stores.
In an earlier skirmish with the German company, traders managed to get proposals for the new store thrown out by the borough’s planning committee who said the design and appearance of the building was not sympathetic to the area’s character. The traders also said the council had failed to alert enough people in the area to the proposal However, following a major public consultation exercise, a fresh application by Aldi has now been approved by Bury’s planning chiefs after the company agreed to a series of changes to the type and style of materials to be used in the store’s construction.
