MACMILLAN Cancer Support was the winner when Whitefield man Graeme Warner organised a charity football match at the Manchester Grammar School.

An All-Star Team, including ex-England internationals Bryan Robson and David Platt, beat a team made up of school staff 3-2 in front of a bumper crowd on Friday, raising £5,000 for the charity in the process.

All three goals from the All Stars came from former Blackburn Rovers striker Matt Jansen.

Each April, Mr Warner, of Ferndale Avenue, rounds up keen footballers to compete for the Stuart Dale Memorial Trophy in memory of the school staff member, who died from cancer in 2005.

Mr Warner, whose son is an ex-pupil at the school, added: "It was a superb day for a great cause. We had a really big crowd and it was a close game.

"Jansen was probably the pick of the bunch. He is still very accomplished as a player.

"Bryan is 60 and can still get around, though."
