Errors cost Bury Broncos as they crash out of cup
5:00pm Thursday 10th April 2014 in Sport
Accrington Panthers hosted Bury Broncos in the second round of the North West Men’s League Trophy.
The Panthers made a good start, taking advantage of the narrow, short pitch by breaking through the middle to produce a well worked try under the sticks. The hosts doubled their lead a few minutes later.
The Panthers shipped the ball out well in their own half, with the Broncos failing to slide over in defence. A missed tackle on the Panthers’ centre allowed him to make a darting run down the right, draw in the full back and release the winger, who raced under the sticks.
Both tries wete converted as the hosts led 12-0.
After capitalising on a lack of Panthers discipline, Warren Bluer scored the Broncos first try of the game. The visitors shipped the ball from left to right for right-centre Rick Brogan to slip the winger into the corner. The conversion was missed by stand-off Sam Fairhurst.
Panthers increased their lead to 18-4 at the start of the second half with a well worked try and conversion.
There was a glimmer of hope for the Broncos when Chris Ready threw a dummy which fooled the opposition. Ready managed to scoot over the line from three yards out to make the score 18-8. The conversion was again missed.
But with the Broncos struggling to get out of their half due to handling errors and misplaced passes, the Panthers took advantage to score another converted try to win 24-8.
