BURY riders Simon and Adam Yates have beaten 2011 champion Mark Cavendish to a place in the GB squad for this month’s Road World Championships in Spain.

The 22-year-old twin brothers have made a provisional 14-man squad, which will be whittled down to eight for the one-day race on September 28.

Cavendish, who required shoulder surgery after crashing out of the opening stage of the Tour de France in Harrogate, was not considered suitable for the 254.8k Ponferrada course, which features 28 climbs.

The Yates brothers have shown their climbing ability already this season, with Simon making his debut for Orica-GreenEDGE in the Tour de France and Adam currently on his Grand Tour debut in the Vuelta a Espania for the same team.

They will be in good company in a British squad that also includes former Tour de France champions Chris Froome and Sir Bradley Wiggins and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Geraint Thomas.

The World Championships begin on September 21 with trade team time-trials and also includes age-group events, with Britain refining selection prior to the event.
