A BRANDLESHOLME boy is celebrating after clinching gold and silver medals in wrestling despite having only taken up the sport six months ago.

Ellis Crossley, 13, of Cromer Road, followed up his second-placed accolade at the English Junior Championships earlier this year by claiming the top honours at the Midland's Invitation competition in Nottingham last week.

The Tottington High School pupil, who began wrestling at the Sharples Wrestling Club last August to help improve his fitness, is also a keen gymnast and plays rugby for Bury.

Despite his tender age and lack of experience, Ellis entered both competitions in the 54 kilos weight category and claimed an impressive first and second place.

Sharples runs from the YMCA in Bolton and trains on Tuesdays and Thursdays for two hours each session.

The classes are open to boys and girls of five years of age and over.
