GREENMOUNT overseas player Jonathan Sammut will join Brandlesholme Road team-mates captain Andy Kerr and Ryan Senior in the GMCL's first ever inter-league outing.

They will be part of the team to take on the Pennine League - another new set-up - at Glossop Cricket Club on Sunday.

Greenmount also have a representative – Tom Heaton – in the Colts (under-18s) side, which will take on the Pennine League at Littleborough on the same day. Both matches start at 1pm.

The Colts will field a total of five players from Bury sides. Dominic Gowers, of Woodbank, is vice captain and wicketkeeper, while Bradley Edge and Adam Earnshaw, both of Unsworth, and Walshaw's Joshua Rhodes are also in the team.

Egerton's David Tattersall, manager of the GMCL senior inter-league side, said: "Without doubt this is the hardest inter-league squad I have ever had to pick with 99 per cent of all players in the top two divisions declaring their availability.

"Unfortunately, there has been a couple of clashes with Lancashire Knockout fixtures which has accounted for some unavailability for selection but that said the team is immensely strong in depth."

A number of players from Premier Division leaders Prestwich had to pull out after their Lancashire KO second-round match at Blackpool was brought forward a week.

However, Blackpool have since been kicked out of the competition for fielding an ineligible player in their opening-round win against Clitheroe, meaning the Prestwich players are available after all, but it was decided not to consider them for selection out of respect for the players who replaced them.

Tattersall added: "I believe the team is very well balanced, which includes three high quality spinners who will have a massive part to play on what is generally regarded as one of the best wickets in the Greater Manchester League.

"They will be backed up by two proven ‘quickies’ in this standard of cricket, namely Adam Street and Adam Sydall.

"The batting line up really whets the appetite and when you consider the quality of individuals left out, many must consider themselves extremely unlucky.

"It really does bode well for the league."

Greenmount spinner Philip Heaton, father of selected Tom, will lead the Colts side.

He said: "The league is really looking forward to seeing these lads perform.

"As a group they are a set of very talented cricketers not only these boys but other members of the squad that we will be utilising over the course of the season."
