Bury AC star Anna Gisbourne shone again at the weekend with a silver medal at the North of England Indoor Track and Field Competition for senior, under-20 and U17 age group athletes in Sheffield.

The club had four athletes competing, with all the action for them taking place on the Saturday and once again it was Gisbourne who produced the standout performance.

The 800m star dropped down to the 400m for some speed work and in her first year in the U20s age group, and competing against athletes one or two years older than her, she scorched round her heat winning it in a new personal best of 56.48secs. In her semi-final, she crossed the line first in 57.48.

The final saw her up against West Cheshire’s Emma Holmes, older and faster on paper than the Bury youngster. Holmes ran a fast first 200 and at the bell was about five or six metres clear.. Using her 800m strength, Gisbourne clawed back the lead but was not able to get past, settling for the silver medal with her second PB of the day of 56.19. The time places her third fastest in the UK over the distance in her age category.

Peter Gardner also competed over 400m in his first year as an U20. He took third in his heat with 53.52, then in the semi-final he had to settle for sixth place, easing off to cross the line in 56.56.

Bury had two competitors in the U17 women’s 60 m hurdles. In the first heat tragedy struck for Evie Elliott as she pulled a hamstring at the third hurdle, forcing her out. In the second heat, Jemima Miles took second with 9.37, which saw her qualify for the final. She ran a little quicker in the final, recording 9.35 for fourth.

A number of Bury athletes ran at the Heaton Parkrun on Saturday. Martin Clark notched up another first place with 16mins 40secs, while Paul Johnston was second in 17:23, followed by Byron Edwards in fifth with 18:02. Matthew Finch set a new PB of 18:36 (12th) - a second ahead of Rob Fowler (13th).

Sinead Taylor was first woman with 18:40, followed by Abigail Warburton in second with 19:07. Caitlyn Johnston set a new PB of 19:09 to take third. Other Bury finishers included Curtis Simpson (19:44), Alex Leach (19:58PB), Sarah Flett (20:15PB), Lucy Dent (20:41) and Alia Braithwaite (21:25).
