Five Radcliffe Athletic Cub ladies picked up awards at the annual Central Lancashire Grand Prix presentation.

Sheila Jones was first F65 over the series of 11 races held and contested by local clubs throughout 2023, and Sheila McNulty was first V75.

Paula Abernethy and Karen Doherty were second in the L55 and L45 categories respectively, while Elaine Bailey (L60) won an award for completing 10 championship races.

They were presented with their prizes after Sunday’s Bolton 5k, the first race in this year’s grand prix. It attracted a bumper turnout of 38 Radcliffe runners who notched up a host of personal bests.

Craig Norman was the club’s first finisher and 42nd overall, clocking 19mins 4secs, while Mia Derbyshire led home the Radcliffe ladies in 23:03 and was 19th woman. Sheila McNulty was first F75 in 32:45.

Kath Davies continued her training for a summer ultra by completing the Anglezarke Amble, a 24-mile circular route in the West Pennine Moors with 3,500 feet of climbing. She actually notched up 26 miles after taking a wrong turn and finished in a fantastic 6:34:00.

Ian Swan was also in action on the hills, completing the 11.5-mile Windy Hill Fell Race in Saddleworth, which had 2,090 feet of climbing. He was 63rd out of 243 runners in 1:51:00.

New member Christian Peters got off to a flying start in his first race for the club, finishing an impressive fifth at Tatton Park 10k in 37:21.

A trio of new members were also at Aintree Half Marathon. Jakub Bramwell clocked 1:23:40, followed by Ryan Hallworth with a PB of 1:34:20 and Joseph Bramwell in 1:45:10.

Four women enjoyed perfect conditions at the penultimate fixture of the Greater Manchester Area Cross Country League. The 8k course at Kenworthy Woods, Wythenshawe included a rolling up and down section though the trees.

Chemane Golding and Karen Doherty were neck-and-neck throughout the three-lap race. But Golding edged ahead at the end to finish in 49:01, four seconds ahead of Doherty.

Louise Shield clocked 58:12, after stopping to help a runner who took a tumble, and Helen Kay ran 1:03:34 having done a parkrun that morning.
