A number of Bury’s young athletes were on county representative duties over the weekend.

Lucy Dent ran at the prestigious English Schools Cross Country Championships, in Pontefract, and was fifth Greater Manchester counter in the junior girls’ race.

Ben Clarke was a star at the Regional Sportshall Athletics Championships at Leigh Sports Village after a late call-up. He competed in four events - the six-lap race, an eight-lap paalauf, a relay and then took a brilliant third place in the shot.

Agatha Wragg ran out as superb winner in her six-lap race and her victory will see her represent the North West in the National Championships in Stoke in April.

Bury also had four under-11 s competing with Niamh Murray, Claudia Chapman, Matilda Nott and Mylah Collier helping Greater Manchester to second team place. Niamh and Mylah then travelled over to Sale to compete in the ‘over the bales’ cross-country race and they were Bury’s first finishers in the U11s race.

On the roads, Luke Harreld had a strong run in the TH96 race on Saturday in Heywood. He had a bad patch in the middle of the race but stuck to the task and was a deserving winner of the six-mile race after a sprint finish in 33mins 55secs.

The previous weekend Bury had three competitors in the Manchester Indoors competition at SportCity. Corrine Newton took fourth in her U17 girls’ 300m in a season’s best of 44.87, while Agatha Wragg won her U15 300m in a new personal-best time of 47.45. There was also a PB for Ethan Statham in his new U13 age group, sealing second in 1:46.34. The time places him fifth in the UK rankings.
