SAILING: Adam Savage and Paul Salmon won the first event of the spring pursuit series with a welcome 6pm south easterly wind.

The series involves the boats setting off at different times depending on the speed rating for each class of boat (slowest first, fastest begins last).

All boats follow the same course and depending on which order they are in at 8pm.

First at 7pm was Clive Roberts in the streaker followed closely by the solo of Malcolm Jones.

An early wrong turn by Roberts allowed Jones to slip through to take an early lead. The Enterprise of Geoff McCardy and Dave Wood looked odds on to win in the evening light winds as they moved ahead of the laser and looked to chase down the front two.

The Phantom and Scorpion started next followed by the armada of RS400s with spinakers at the ready at 7.20pm.

As the race progressed, it was easy to see who had just brought their boat out from winter storage as the gybe mark in front of the sailing club house was rounded in various styles.

By 7:45pm, the RS400s and Phantom were making good progress through the fleet and by 8pm finish signal, the RS400 of Savage and Salmon were clearly in the lead, with the Phantom of Mike Seger in second and the Enterprise of McCardy and Wood in third.

This was a good start to the Wednesday nights racing which continues until mid September and entertains many walkers and runners at Elton Reservoir.
