BADMINTON: The talented juniors of Bury Topflight Badminton Club are celebrating after lifting their maiden trophy.
The club’s senior team, of 14 to 16-year-olds, won the inaugural Greater Manchester Junior League.
The winning side, which consisted of George Jacobs, Greg Maxwell, Peter Fisher and George Doherty, beat Rochdale, Bolton and Moss Side in the final.
“It’s a great achievement because we have only being going as a club for 18 months,” said coach Gary Harrall.
“One of our star players is George Jacobs and he hadn’t picked up a racket before he joined us. Now he is on the verge of being selected to play for the county.”
Bury’s other two teams at the championships finished runners-up.
The club play at Castle Leisure Centre and have 39 registered players with a further eight on the waiting list.
