BURY fell victim to a real smash and grab at Gigg Lane - conceding in the first and final minutes of a match they dominated.

The Shakers pummelled Keith Curle’s promotion contenders for large periods but could not force their way back into the game after veteran striker Lee Hughes caught them napping after just 90 seconds.

And Magpies forward Alan Judge made them pay for a succession of missed chances, sealing the victory with a breakaway goal in the 90th minute.

Bury had barely woken up when Hughes glanced in his first goal in a Notts County shirt since February 14, glancing Judge’s inswinging free-kick past the stranded Trevor Carson after the defence were caught flat-footed.

But the Shakers were soon on the front foot, with the lively strike pairing of Mark Cullen and Lenell John-Lewis at the heart of everything.

Phil Picken, in at right back for his first start after Andrai Jones was withdrawn due to illness, created the first clear opening after 17 minutes.

His deep cross found the head of Cullen, who forced Magpies keeper Bartosz Bialkowski into a save at the back post.

Cullen then failed to connect to a drilled John-Lewis pass across goal before the big striker missed four good chances of his own – dragging three shots wide and missing with a header.

Bialkowski was then forced to make a flying save to tip David Worrall’s back post header clear after the winger launched himself at a deep Joe Skarz cross late in the first half.

Bury were less effective after the break, but still controlled possession, County seemingly happy to sit deep and play on the break.

John-Lewis had the best chance of the second period, but was unable guide Skarz’s dinked cross past Bialkowski.

Peter Shirtliff was unable to inspire another comeback from the touchline after last week’s draw at Coventry. The caretaker boss had fewer options on the bench after loaning out Andy Bishop and then losing David Healy to a thigh strain.

Bury continued to press though and were caught out late in the game after a stray Schumacher pass fell to Andre Boucaud, who ran upfield and found Judge.

The attacking midfielder duly completed Notts County’s daylight robbery and sent Shirtliff’s men home third from bottom in League One, still searching for their first win of the season.
