Dave Marshall was the overall winner of the inaugural Bill Turner Trophy and his club, Ramsbottom won the team trophy, at Bradshaw Fisheries, Lodge Number Four. It was the local angling fraternity’s most important match of the season – in honour of former Bury Times angling columnist Turner, who passed away recently. Radcliffe, Bury and District Angling Society, and Heywood and District Angling Societies, Ramsbottom Angling Association, King William IV Angling Society and, making there first appearance for 30 years, Smithills Staff Fishing Team all took part. . Six members represented each club. Before the start, one angler actually foul-hooked a carp of about 15lb, landing it with minutes before the whistle went to start the competition. When the whistle did go it looked as if Sean Miller (Radcliffe) was hot favourite as, within a short time, he was reeling in some nice-sized carp. As the match wore on, it became difficult to discern the leader and the marshalls had their work cut out. They gave their all and could not be faulted on the day. The final whistle went and the weigh-in was closely followed by all the anglers as it was a tight call. Result: 1 Dave Marshall 86lb (Ramsbottom) 2 Andy Davison 83lb.(King William IV) 3 Graham Walsh (Bury) Team event: 1 Ramsbottom, 2 Heywood, 3 Radcliffe, 4 Bury, 5 King William, 6 Smithills.
